This article is based on a LinkedIn post by Asen Asenov – Executive Chairman of Green Silicon Carbide Manufacturing, CEO of Semiwise and Professor at the University of Glasgow. The UK-Bulgaria semiconductor collaboration continues to gain strategic momentum following the publication of “
UK-Bulgaria: Connecting Semiconductor Expertise for Growth” and the successful delivery of two UK Semiconductor Missions to Bulgaria and one Bulgarian Semiconductor Mission to the UK/Scotland.
Organised by the UK Embassy in Sofia, these missions created a platform on which the Green Silicon Carbide (GSCM) project was first formally presented in January 2024, marking the beginning of a high-impact industrial initiative.
From Presentation to Pioneer Project
- January 2024 - The Green Silicon Carbide project was presented at the UK Semiconductor Mission to Bulgaria
- October 2024 - GSCM was formally established as a pioneering semiconductor investment initiative
Since its establishment,
Green Silicon Carbide Manufacturing has evolved into a strategically positioned project focused on advanced silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing. The initiative strengthens Bulgaria’s role in Europe’s next-generation power electronics and compound semiconductor supply chain.
Strategic UK Partnerships Powering GSCMGSCM operates through structured collaboration with leading UK semiconductor and advanced manufacturing organisations:
- Clas-SiC Fab - Licensing leading-edge SiC technology to GSCM
- CIL and RAM Innovations - Developing what is expected to be among the world’s most advanced SiC power electronics modules
- Semiwise - Developing the world’s first SiC fab digital twin for GSCM
- Wafer Fab Solutions (in collaboration with Clas-SiC) - Selecting fabrication equipment and developing the CAPEX/OPEX investment model
- Grant Thornton Bulgaria - Developing GSCM’s comprehensive strategic business plan
Together, these partnerships integrate technology, digital manufacturing, financial modelling, and industrial execution into a coherent and scalable fabrication strategy.
Expanding the UK-Bulgaria Semiconductor BridgeLooking ahead, GSCM plans to further strengthen its international footprint by exploring the establishment of an R&D center in Scotland, subject to potential support from Scottish development agencies. This step would deepen cross-border research collaboration, accelerate technology transfer, and reinforce the long-term UK-Bulgaria semiconductor partnership.
Building a Resilient European Semiconductor FutureBy combining UK compound semiconductor expertise with Bulgaria’s manufacturing capacity and strategic location,
Green Silicon Carbide Manufacturing is contributing to the development of a resilient, competitive, and innovation-driven European supply chain for advanced compound semiconductors.
